For my unconventional material sculpture challenge I received three rolls of masking tape. At first I thought it would be a difficult material to come up with an idea and sculpture. I knew I wanted the majority of my sculpture to be out of the material I was given but tape itself is very difficult to sculpt out of. Then I came up with an idea to use the actual rolls of tape for the structure of my sculpture. I used three different sized rolls and stacked them from the biggest as the base and the smallest at the top to get a volcano shape. I then used masking tape to cover the rolls to give it a rocky texture. I then used crayon to fill the inside and melted them using a heat gun. I used red orange and yellow crayons. This gave a look of flowing lava erupting from the volcano. I believe I was successful in making a realistic looking miniature volcano out of my material..
I am inspired by retired NASA physicist Robert Lang. Robert Lang retired as a physicist in 2001 to follow his true passion, origami. I'm inspired by Lang not only because of his crazy origami creations but his dedication to his true passion. I hope to one day find something, like Lang, that i'm motivated by that much and truly passionate about. Lang grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and was always brilliant. He attended the California Institute of Technology for his undergraduate work in electrical engineering and earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford. Its amazing how he uses math and science to plan each fold before creating the paper into a marvelous sculpture. Robert Lang has sparked my interest for origami and I hope to try it by the end of the year.

(these were the only two pictures I had of my tile and cardboard piece, I will add more tomorrow).
Tile Piece I was happy on how the texture for the leaves and bark turned out on the tree. I was also impressed on my ability to carve around the tree and branches to show relief in my piece. I was successful in using new techniques such as score and slip to attach the swing to the clay tile. I was not as satisfied with the final product, I felt as if I did a sloppy job with the acrylic paint and my glass didn't turn out as I thought it would. If I could do it over I would have made the swing smaller or the tree larger since the swing appears unproportional to the tree. I would have also made the glass pieces smaller and more abundant so the glass section would have filled in better. Cardboard piece I found this project to be very fun working with cardboard. I chose to make a fire relief piece. I was content with how the flames turned out and my precision cutting through the cardboard around the curves of the flames. However, if I could redo the piece I would have made another layer of flames under the original flames. I also wish my red and orange would have mixed together better to make more of an ombre between the colors. 1. Rock
The rock texture was challenging because I found it hard to find tools that mimic the texture of a rock accurately. 2. Fur I felt this was my strongest texture, however, my biggest challenge was trying to create long realistic looking fur 3. Cloud The cloud by far was my most challenging texture. I tried using my hands to create the texture since i couldn't find a suitable clay utensil, unfortunately that decision didn't turn out to well for me. |
