For my unconventional material sculpture challenge I received three rolls of masking tape. At first I thought it would be a difficult material to come up with an idea and sculpture. I knew I wanted the majority of my sculpture to be out of the material I was given but tape itself is very difficult to sculpt out of. Then I came up with an idea to use the actual rolls of tape for the structure of my sculpture. I used three different sized rolls and stacked them from the biggest as the base and the smallest at the top to get a volcano shape. I then used masking tape to cover the rolls to give it a rocky texture. I then used crayon to fill the inside and melted them using a heat gun. I used red orange and yellow crayons. This gave a look of flowing lava erupting from the volcano. I believe I was successful in making a realistic looking miniature volcano out of my material..
I am inspired by retired NASA physicist Robert Lang. Robert Lang retired as a physicist in 2001 to follow his true passion, origami. I'm inspired by Lang not only because of his crazy origami creations but his dedication to his true passion. I hope to one day find something, like Lang, that i'm motivated by that much and truly passionate about. Lang grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and was always brilliant. He attended the California Institute of Technology for his undergraduate work in electrical engineering and earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford. Its amazing how he uses math and science to plan each fold before creating the paper into a marvelous sculpture. Robert Lang has sparked my interest for origami and I hope to try it by the end of the year.
